Preliminary Call for Papers

The 22nd IFIP WG 7.3 symposium will address state-of-the-art techniques
and tools for performance evaluation with particular emphasis on new areas,
such as, Internet and Web, active networks and content distribution
networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Techniques and tools for analytic modeling, simulation, performance optimization,
stochastic modeling, model checking, reliability analysis, system
measurement and monitoring, workload characterization.

Performance-oriented design and evaluation studies of communication
networks, active networks, Web architectures, computer architectures,
database systems, operating systems, multimedia systems, real-time systems,
fault-tolerant systems.

Program

Paper/Poster Sessions:
Full papers should not exceed 20 double-spaced pages including figures,
tables and references. A limited number of submitted papers will be
accepted for a poster session. Authors wishing to have their work
considered for the poster session may submit a short paper not
exceeding 5 double-spaced pages. Submissions must be made
electronically as Postscript or Adobe PDF files through the Conference
Web site (http://perf2002.uniroma2.it). In case of problems,
send papers by email to papers@perf2002.uniroma2.it.
Papers will be selected on the basis of their originality,
relevance and clarity.

Full papers will be published in a special issue of the
Journal Performance Evaluation (Elsevier) available at the conference.

Tutorial Sessions:
Tutorial proposals, not exceeding 5 pages, have to include title,
abstract, duration, intended audience, assumed background of attendees,
name, affiliation and a biographical sketch of the instructors. Proposals
should be sent to tutorials@perf2002.uniroma2.it. Evaluation of proposals
will be based on instructor expertise, and on the relevance of the
subject matter. A book of survey papers on the tutorial topics
will be published. Publisher is under negotiation.

Hot/Controversial Topic Sessions:
Proposals are solicited for sessions in which a group of speakers will
present and discuss ideas on recent results in a hot or controversial
area. Send proposals for these sessions to proposals@perf2002.uniroma2.it,
specifying the name, affiliation and a brief biography of organizer(s)
of the session, the session title, and a list of possible speakers.
The submission should also indicate whether any published material is required
for the session.

Awards:
The Scientific Committee will assign the "Best Paper" and
the "Best Student Paper" awards. Papers eligible for the student
award must have a full-time student as the first author.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Submission of full papers and
Proposals for special sessions: March 24, 2002
Notification of acceptance: May 25, 2002

   Further details and submission information:
        http://www.cs.wisc.edu/asplos-X/

ASPLOS is a multi-disciplinary conference, cross-fertilizing research in
areas of hardware, architecture, compilers, operating systems, networking,
and applications. It has captured some of the major computer systems
innovations of the past 10-15 years. ASPLOS is co-sponsored by ACM
SIGARCH, SIGOPS, and SIGPLAN.

Like its predecessors, the tenth ASPLOS conference will focus on
ground-breaking multi-disciplinary research. In addition, the
program committee welcomes research papers on a wide range of
non-traditional topics provided they emphasize the multi-disciplinary
aspects of their work. As ASPLOS expands its scope, we encourage
questions to the Program Chair regarding suitability of a topic.
Full papers are solicited on, but not limited to, these topics:

. Interaction of operating systems, compilers, programming languages,
        and architectures
. Hardware/software issues for new form-factor devices, from
        wireless PDA's to wall-sized displays
. Hardware/software platform issues focusing on Internet services
. Hardware/software platforms for delivering graphics and multimedia
. Embedding computation and storage (e.g., caches) within the
        network
. Case studies of hardware/software design in novel experimental
        systems
. Studies of Internet applications and services with implications
        for systems
. Performance evaluation of experimental systems
. Effect of future VLSI technology and emerging applications on
        architectures, operating systems or compilers

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

PACT brings together researchers from architecture, compilers,
languages and applications to present ground-breaking research and
debate key issues of common interest. This premier conference, the
eleventh in the series, will be held in historic Charlottesville,
Virginia, home of the University of Virginia, which was founded by
Thomas Jefferson as one of the first public universities in the United
States. Charlottesville is nestled next to the beautiful Shenandoah
mountains, with the homes of three presidents (Jefferson, Madison, and
Monroe), Civil War sites, and many fine wineries nearby. Once again,
the focus of the conference will be on multi-disciplinary
research. PACT solicits novel papers on a broad range of topics,
including, but not limited to:

* Parallel architectures and computation models
* Compilers and tools for parallel computer systems
* I/O issues in parallel computing
* Parallel processing in the context of Java
* Compiler/hardware support for efficient memory systems
* New architectures and compilers for ILP and TLP
* Novel uses for threads to improve performance or power
* Applications and experimental systems studies
* Application-specific systems
* Software dynamic translation and modification
* Hardware/software support for energy-aware computing systems
* Technologies for managing energy and heat
* Network processing and computing
* Non-traditional computing system topics
* Parallel programming languages and algorithms
* Operating system support for parallel systems
* Mobile/wireless computing in the context of parallel applications

INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

Detailed instructions for electronic submission and important dates
will be posted on the PACT conference website. For any additional
information regarding paper submission, please contact the Program
Chairs, Erik Altman (erik@watson.ibm.com) or Sally McKee
(sam@cs.utah.edu). The paper submission deadline is April 2, 2002
(12:00 Midnight Eastern Standard Time) with mandatory abstracts due March 26,
2002 (same time).

TUTORIALS / WORKSHOPS

Proposals are solicited for tutorials and workshops to be held during
the conference. Interested individuals are invited to submit proposals
to the Workshop/Tutorial Chairs, Chen Ding (cding@cs.rochester.edu) and E. Christopher Lewis (lewis@cis.upenn.edu).

WORK IN PROGRESS SESSION

PACT will again feature a fun, informal WIP session for authors to
present eight-minute talks on research directions or wacky ideas. The
associated abstracts will be included in electronic versions of the
conference and workshop proceedings, and will be published later in an
appropriate newsletter. Contact WIP Chair Nikos Pitsianis
(nikos@bops.com) with questions about content and important dates.
