Re: [HTCondor-users] Cluster upgrade from 8.8 to 9.0

Thanks for the replies. I think we’ll wait until 10. And try to get to the 2023 HTCondor users workshop, assuming it’s happening next year.

Hi,

we did a rolling update of StartDs from 8.8 to 9.0 while the Collector/Negotiator was even older than 8.8. Internal Auth was PASSWORD. So a mixed mode is very much possible.

There is a BUT: The authentication defaults have changed subtly. There is a high chance that your old configuration won’t work as-is and if you are used just to 8.8 Auth the errors won’t be obvious.

So I highly recommend to start with an 9.0 StartD and work out the new required Auth settings there first. Running Collectors/Negotiators in an HA setup also gives good flexibility to roll back.

Consider though that the new 9.0 Auth options (and others) allow for much simpler setup. If you can split the cluster during the upgrade it may be a good opportunity to get rid of historically grown configs.

Cheers –– Max

When we upgrade from 8.8 to 9.0, do all servers in the cluster have to be upgraded at the same time, or is a mixed 8.8 / 9.0 cluster supported?
