[HTCondor-users] BoscoR and recent Microsoft deal to buy Revolution Analytics

Hi everyone

Two days ago Microsoft acquired Revolution Analytics  for an undisclosed amount Probably for hundreds of million, as they had $38m in funding already.

This made me mad. Why did we not exploit the BoscoR? Revolution Analytics were not a big thing, they fiddle with R open source to explain it to the people on the street, and now Microsoft rewards them for this.

This shows the intuition we had to  make BoscoR was correct. Yet, BoscoR is accumulating dust in some HTCondor repository

As part of my role in the Bosco team, I did the UX research to adapt Bosco for R users.
(Please note UX is different from the Usability)

The final paper has been presented by Derek W. in November at
7th Workshop on Many-Task Computing on Clouds, Grids, and Supercomputers (MTAGS) 2014

In 2013, Dan Frazer presented our idea to UseR! 2013, Albacete, Spain, July12, 2013. Revolution Analytics were very interested and BoscoR team had some intense interaction with them. They liked our BoscoR because it uses the same interface  R people know. The learning curve to R in clusters is flat in our solution.

Revolution Analytics has Hadoop R clusters done with Hortonworks (not Cloudera)

But experience has shown to me  that pronouncing the word "Hadoop" to mainstream 2 million laptop R users, scares them away. In fact they ran as fast as they can . The nice thing of Grid R (part of BoscoR) is that it is easy to use and is sufficient in 80% to 90% of all calculation with R using external cluster. Maybe 10%  need the Big Data Hadoop justifiable complication.

Based on the work on BoscoR,   I prepared recently and Executive Summary seeking seed money for  "Rperform.net as a commercial on-demand service to do high performance R calculations. There is no similar product yet on the market, Quoting from the recent book, "From Zero to One" by Peter Thiel:

"Doing something different is what’s truly good for society— and it’s also what allows a business to profit by monopolizing a new market. The best projects are likely to be overlooked, not trumpeted by a crowd; the best problems to work on are often the ones nobody else even tries to solve."

R is typically used by people that have not used distributed computing before and do most of their analysis on  their local systems (laptops, workstations) with popular interfaces such as R-Studio.

OSG could collect credit is such a startup  to be alive. I could not find even one engineer from OSG, Fermi lab, who said the he is not "busy".

I need to people to join me, one placing Grid R one cluster (all instructions are provided) and on R engineer to provide support.
We need to set Rperfom alive 1st, then look for a first round of financing.

Please write to me on private, if interested. And I would love to get support from OSG or CHTC or any of the U of Wisconsin, Chicago, Fermi Lab and  the nice crowd from University of Indiana or Nebraska. Just to give us some bytes to show our investors, who do not believe me as lone wolf barking to the moon :)

Cheers,

Miha
