Actually, now that I am reading the fine manual, it seems I want to tell
startd
 RANK = -slotid
because this will be the "machine rank" that is considered in addition
to "job's rank". Whereas APPEND_RANK and DEFAULT_RANK are "job rank";
APPEND may potentially conflict with user-specified rank and DEFAULT
gets overwritten. Am I reading that correctly?
