I think GEMS people can answer the reasoning better. However, if you are still trying to find the directory you can just copy it from an earlier release such as gems2.0.

I have solved the problem. But when successfully compiled ruby and opal, checkpoints directory does not exist in GEMS_ROOT directory. I don't know what is the reason. Can anybody tell me?
