[theory students] theory lunch take 2

Hi all,

The turnout at theory lunch this semester has been dismal even going by the standards of the last few years. Several people responded to the survey Ben sent out earlier this semester indicating their availability on Wednesdays but haven't shown up even once.

Let's all please make an effort to make this event meaningful.

The theory lunch is a good way to learn about gossip in the field/department, to discuss group related issues in person rather than over email, and generally have a good time!Â

To help improve attendance, I'm proposing two changes:Â

- First, we'll do the lunch in the department. You can bring your own food. The benefit is that people can join in for as little as 10-15 mins. You don't have to be there exactly at 12:30 to join in -- just stop by when you can and leave when you have to. This reduces everyone's time commitment. (For me personally, this hugely increases my chances of showing up.) Another benefit is that we can some times have a white board discussion if someone has something interesting to discuss. Last year we enjoyed talking about some theory related puzzles on occasion.

- Second, I'll bring some dessert to share on most weeks.

If you are unable to make it on Wednesdays, but would be able to join in on another day, please send me email. If I get many responses of this sort, we'll do another poll for a day/time.

Thanks for your help in making the group more collegial and friendly.
