Subject: [os-reading] Paper for this week: Measuring interference between datacenter applications
Hi all,

Tomorrow, lets meet at 1 PM at 4310 CS to discuss "Measuring
Interference Between Live Datacenter Applications".

Paper link: http://arcade.cs.columbia.edu/interference-sc12.pdf.

Quick Summary:
The paper enumerates a list of challenges in measuring application interference in a datacenter environment. Specifically they point out that most of the existing solutions for measuring application interference make assumptions that are not practical in a datacenter environment like, the ability to have a learning phase in a live datacenter where you try out various co-scheduling application mixes and measure interference, etc. With the challenges/constraints imposed by a datacenter environment in mind, they come up with a very simple methodology to infer interference between running applications by collecting co-scheduling traces and performance of applications measured using hardware counters.
