Unix Systems Specialist

We are seeking an energetic Unix systems specialist to join our team in
implementing, expanding and supporting our state-of-the-art, distributed
instructional applications and their infrastructure.  One major system is
the "My UW-Madison" campus-wide portal, which includes a large and complex
cluster of 10 Unix servers.  Another major system is the "WebCT Utility"
or web-based learning system for Madison and other UW campuses, which
includes several Unix servers.

These web-based systems employ dedicated Solaris and Linux servers running
Apache, Java/JSP and web application servers, Oracle, LDAP-based
authentication, Layer 4 network services, Amanda backup services, and the
commercial Epicentric portal framework and WebCT application.  They
interact with other advanced enterprise systems, such as our
PeopleSoft-based student systems, campus email and calendar systems, and
digital library systems.  Our projects provide opportunities to learn and
apply advanced systems administration skills in a stimulating University
environment.

Strong candidates will have several years of Unix systems administration
experience (Solaris and Linux preferred), experience in Perl and
Unix-based programming, and hands-on Apache support experience.  We seek
strong problem resolution skills and a proven ability to learn new
technical environments.  Sound communications and teamwork skills and
customer orientation are essential.  Experience in Java support (JSPs,
JVMs, web application servers) and Oracle support (including SQL) under
Unix would be a plus.

Starting annual salary will be from $49,138 to $68,000, depending on
