rdist is kindof like a very complicated Makefile ... rsync is much
cleaner for simple copies.

for anything complicated, look at cfengine. it takes a while (or it took
me a while anyway) to understand how to configure it, but it is designed
for handing more than just file installs -- such as post-install action
-- much better than rdist's "special" rule.
