Looking a TeX I get the feeling that lots of things are possible... but
nobody knows what they are or how to achieve them.

To close this: the user traced this to including some TeX library in
their code. That seems to try and build scaled versions of some bitmap
fonts in the user's personal font-cache directory.

They commented out that include and went through the document making
sure all the fonts are times new roman or something. That fixed it.

In other words make sure you're using a) only vector fonts and b) only
the bits you need and not some boilerplate header that includes
everything and a kitchen sink.
