It's usually easier to use the mail system as a front end to other
notification systems. There are many FLOSS and commercial email to
${FOO} gateways to choose from so you won't have to roll your own unless
you're doing something esoteric. Bonus: given how aliases work, a single
address can feed multiple notification systems.
