This a great success story. But what version of Windows did you have on the i5 and i7 windows machines?

HTCondor documentation ,  http://research.cs.wisc.edu/htcondor/manual/v7.9/1_5Availability.html#sec:Availability Lists only

> - All versions Windows XP SP3 or greater (clipped)

What does greater means?  

Windows Services for UNIX Version 3.5 from Microsoft states

> > Supported Operating System
> > Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP
> > The minimum system requirements for installing Windows Services for UNIX depends on which components you are installing and the file system of the disk where the components will be installed

This fits rather well with  HTCondor specs 

Also it states

> Note: The product will not install on Windows 9x or Windows XP Home Edition or Windows Vista. The product should not be installed on Windows Server 2003 R2. This is an unsupported configuration.
