It's not an error. They just mean different things.
MYTHING = "blah"
Means: set an attribute named MYTHING to the string value "blah".
MYTHING = blah
Means: set an attribute named MYTHING to be a reference to an attribute named blah. The reference isn't resolved until MYTHING is used in an _expression_ IIRC.
