Just to (part) answer my own question from yesterday...

we were having problems getting a x86_64/Linux box seen and accepting 
jobs in our pool. We have a Windows XP master. We had to stop the XP 
firewall briefly - the x86_64 client was then seen - and restart it.
Maybe this is a port range issue betwixt Linux and Windows?
