[Condor-users] can't install 6.8.4 on Win XP (previous ones ok)

Hi,

I'm having problems installing Condor 6.8.4 on Win XP although
past installs have been - relatively - problem free. I tried the
manual install as I want to install this on a largish pool using
Novell Application Launcher. I unzipped the distro to c:\condor
then copied over a previously working condor_config file. Set 

CONDOR_CONFIG=c:\condor\condor_config
RELEASE_DIR=c:\condor

in the registry. Then 

C:\condor>sc create Condor binpath= c:\condor\bin\condor_master.exe
[SC] CreateService SUCCESS
C:\condor>sc query Condor

SERVICE_NAME: Condor
        TYPE               : 10  WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
        STATE              : 1  STOPPED
 
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 1077       (0x435)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT         : 0x0

C:\condor>net start condor

The Condor service was started successfully.

But then there's no sign of the condor_master in the process list and
annoyingly the logs directory is empty so it's difficult to see what
has gone awry. More confusingly:

C:\condor>net stop condor
The Condor service is not started.

I tried the MSI install but it bombs out with this error:

CUSTOM ACTION "ExeCaKeyF04" FAILED .... 

(usual non-informative M$ stuff ... ).

I've seen this on previous releases which is why I plumped
to the manual install.

any ideas on this would be extremely welcome as our pool 
is well overdue an update (still on 6.6.x).
