Ok , this works now, even without SOFT or TRUST, but I thought I already
tried that :-( I must have somehow done it wrong. I have not changed the
/etc/hosts or anything like that in the last couple of days, so I must
have made a typeo

No, you should set UID_DOMAIN to be something like
UID_DOMAIN = .beowulf.cluster
and make sure that DNS or /etc/hosts is setup right on all the
machines in your cluster.
