I don't anything about maya, but in /bin/sh programming, shift doesn't 
change $0, just the numbered arguments, so try something like

#!/bin/sh

HOMEROOT=$1
shift
USERNAME=$1
shift
RESOURCEPATH=$1
shift

/some/path/mayarender $@ ${HOMEROOT}${USERNAME}${RESOURCEPATH}
