$$ refers to ClassAd values on the target machine so it can't be
expanded until the match is made. I use it for something similar to
what you are doing but I can't be certain it can accurately determine
the VM#.

When does $$(HOSTNAME) get expaned? When the job is submitted or when
the job begins to execute? Really what I'd like to do is know the vm#
for the job as well, which $$(HOSTNAME) won't give me but the RemoteHost
ClassAd from the job would.
