Go for it, but a quick Google search suggests there exist IRC bots that can read an RSS feed and retransmit it to IRC. You can get an RSS feed from the wiki (it's mostly git commits, with the occasional ticket changes mixed in). So this might be particularly easy. I haven't tried these bots, but if they work you don't need to reinvent the wheel.
