If you haven't already viewed the GEMS Tutorial presentation (located at
the GEMS website), this gives an overview of how these files fit in.
The protocol files are specified in our domain-specific language called
"SLICC". When a protocol is built, slicc generates C/C++ code which is
then compiled along with the rest of Ruby.
